Meet Niklas Sakurai, an architect with a deep passion for nature and the outdoors.
Niklas is a Japanese-certified architect. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Department of Architecture at the Hokkaido University of Science, an engineering-focused program, where he was honored with the Special Award for Extracurricular Achievement upon graduation.
He joined ABD Architecture LLC in May 2025 after supporting the firm for three years as an Assistant Architect. With a sharp sense of detail and strong expertise in 3D representation, he is responsible for physical model making and BIM-based architectural design. As a native Japanese speaker, he also contributes to building approval applications and regulatory consultations.
Niklas holds Japan’s Second-Class Architect license and the Japanese Real Estate License, demonstrating a solid technical foundation and a strong understanding of both design and property regulations. He is committed to continually advancing his professional abilities, actively seeking opportunities to deepen his expertise through practical, hands-on project experience.
Outside of work, Niklas is an avid year-round outdoor enthusiast, enjoying scuba diving, mountaineering, ice climbing, snowboarding, and road cycling.
He is also an active trail runner and has achieved finalist at Red Bull 400 Japan 2022 (Men’s Single) and 2nd overall at Teine Trail 2023 (Men’s Single) 5 km.
These results reflect his consistency, endurance, and personal discipline.
Niklas also holds hunting licenses for both trapping and net hunting, which he pursued after his family’s fruit orchard experienced significant damage from deer. This experience led him to learn more about wildlife management and contribute to protecting local agriculture.
Niklas is fluent in Japanese and English at a professional architectural level and also speaks German with high proficiency.
